About Dekalb County Animal Shelter

Mission statement

The purpose of this League is the relief of suffering and neglect among animals, seeking of suitable homes for animals without homes, the prevention of cruelty to animals by extension of humane education.

History

The DeKalb County Animal Shelter has been serving the needs of the homeless, stray and abandoned dogs and cats in DeKalb County for over 32 years.

Thirty-five years ago the DeKalb County Animal Shelter took in it’s first dog before the concrete on the floor was set. Those footprints are still there to remind us of the ongoing need for the shelter we provide. In the past five years we have been able to purchase the property the shelter sits on, remove 30 year old kennels to provide a better environment for our dogs, replace old chainlink dog cages with new raised cages to keep our dogs off the floor and comfortable. Currently we are preparing to start an addition to accommodate a new isolation area, a food prep space and “get acquainted” areas for meet & greets between pets and prospective adopters. It will also house our mega laundry area.
